Tooth decay is one of the most common oral health problems. Thankfully, it’s also one of the easiest to detect and treat. Calgary dentist Dr. Gordon Chee provides multiple preventative and general services for cavities.

Poor dental hygiene isn’t the only cause of cavities, but it is a major risk factor. By allowing plaque to build up on your teeth and not cleaning it off in a timely, thorough fashion, you’ll increase the likelihood of bacteria eroding and damaging parts of your teeth.

You might not realize you have a cavity until bacteria begin attacking the pulp, or innermost portion of the tooth. When this happens, you could begin experiencing typical symptoms of toothache such as:

  • Pain, especially when a hot or cold substances comes into contact with the tooth
  • Sensitivity in the affected tooth
  • Tenderness when biting or chewing
  • Visible damage or discoloration to the tooth surface

Speak to your dentist as soon as possible if you start experiencing these symptoms. When you arrive at our Calgary office, Dr. Chee will examine your teeth and discuss prospective treatment options. The treatment for your tooth will depend on how far the cavity has advanced.

Regular cleanings and fluoride treatments are the best solution for preventing and stopping tooth decay in its early stages, while a filling, crown or other restoration might be necessary for repairing teeth with larger cavities. If bacteria have reached the dental pulp, root canal therapy will need to be performed in order to remove the damaged tissue and repair the tooth.

If your tooth is hurting, speak to a Calgary dentist right away. Please contact Aesthetic Dental Studio or call 403-543-4600 today to schedule an evaluation with Dr. Chee.
