Also know as TMJ (temporomandibular joint syndrome), TMD is a progressive medical condition that can produce a wide range of symptoms, such as:
- Chronic, severe headaches or migraines
- Jaw pain
- Numbness and tingling in the face and jaw
- Popping or clicking in the jaw
- Pain and stiffness in the teeth, face, neck and shoulders
- Recurring earaches and vertigo
- Ringing in the ears
- Teeth-grinding (leading to chipped or worn teeth)
- Problems chewing food properly
What Causes TMD?
The joints on either side of the head (called TM joints) are in constant use for actions like chewing and speaking. When those joints are out of alignment in any way, it can affect how the muscles work, as well as a patient’s bite, both of which can lead to the symptoms of TMJ.
Resolving TMD with Neuromuscular Dentistry
Neuromuscular dentistry can relieve the discomfort of TMJ by discovering the best position for the jaw, manipulating the TM joints and correcting a misaligned bite.
Neuromuscular dentistry treatments and diagnostic techniques for TMD vary but can include:
- A technology called Transcutaneous Electro Neural Stimulation (TENS), sends small pulses of electricity into muscles in the face and jaw, relaxing the muscles for repositioning of the jaw.
- Electromyography (EMG) is used to measure the jaw-muscle activity to identify the points where the muscles are under duress.
- Computer scanning and listening technology to follow and analyze jaw movements.
- Orthodontic treatment
- Custom mouth guards
