Questions about Invisalign

Calgary, Alberta

How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign aligners work to realign your teeth in gentle progressions over the course of your treatment. One of our doctors will map out the ideal alignment of your jaw prior to beginning treatment. From this map, a customize set of Invisalign clear plastic aligners are created. Every two weeks, these aligners are switched out, allowing only specific teeth to be moved during each treatment period.

What are the primary benefits of Invisalign?

Invisalign is ideal for adults and teenagers who require orthodontic treatment but do not want the physical and emotional discomfort associated with traditional wire braces. In addition, because the aligners are removable, tasks like eating, brushing, and flossing are much easier.

How long do I need to wear Invisalign every day?

Invisalign uses gentle force to move your teeth into proper alignment and is designed to be virtually unnoticeable to those around you. In order for Invisalign to work appropriately, you will need to wear your aligners for 20-22 hours a day. We recommend only removing your aligners to eat and brush your teeth. If your aligners are not worn for the proper amount of time every day, your treatment period can be substantially longer.

How long does Invisalign treatment take?

The exact amount of time your treatment will take relies on your specific orthodontic needs. In general, Invisalign can produce a straight, seamless smile and correct bite issues within twelve months. This process may take longer for teenagers, but does not generally exceed eighteen months.

After my Invisalign treatment, will I need a retainer?

To keep your teeth in their optimal position after Invisalign you may require a positioner or retainer. The length and frequency of wear varies from patient to patient, and will be based entirely on the needs of your mouth. Clear plastic retainers worn during sleep are a popular choice for many of our patients who require additional support to keep teeth aligned.
