Implants
Calgary, Alberta
Dental implants have quickly become the most popular and best treatment for replacing missing teeth. Rather than simply resting on the gum line like dentures, or using adjacent teeth as anchors liked dental bridges, implants are long-term replacements that your cosmetic dentist surgically places in the jawbone. Research indicates that almost 70% of adults ages 35-44 have lost at least one tooth to gum disease, an injury, a bad root canal or tooth decay, and by the age of 74, a staggering 26% of adults have lost all of their permanent teeth.
A dental implant can be used when the jawbone is wide and high enough to support it. These are small titanium cylinders rather like actual tooth roots. They are made from titanium because over the years it was found that bone will grow readily around it. The jawbone must grow in closely and make the implant part of itself. This creates a strong anchor for the new tooth that will be placed on the implant.

Computer Guided Implants
At Aesthetic Dental Studio, our dentists are trained in providing computer guided implants. We use a new system that makes implants very accurate and safe. Using CT (computerized tomography) scanning and computer software, we can position a dental implant on a computer before it ever reaches your mouth. This information is then transferred to a surgical guide that allows us to place an implant perfectly aligned with your bite, with the exact orientation and depth while avoiding adjacent teeth, nerves, and major blood vessels. It is a much less invasive and more predictable method than that traditionally used.
The Implant Process
There are three dental visits necessary, with intervals in between for healing.
- One of our dentists will do the dental surgery to position the implant inside the jawbone. He or she will use a local anesthetic to numb any pain. A sedative can be given to help you relax and be calm. Afterwards, a period of several months will be required for the bone to heal fully. It will embrace the implant, growing up against it.
- When this healing is complete, the implant dentist will do a second procedure where he will attach a piece to the top of the implant. This is known as an abutment and it will protrude through the gums. The new tooth will be attached to it. After this procedure, only a couple of weeks are needed for healing.
- The porcelain tooth will be attached to the abutment.
