Endodontics is the study of the inside part of the tooth. Referred to as the pulp, it is essential for the tooth to grow, but once the tooth is full-grown, the pulp is no longer necessary, and, in fact, may have to be removed to fully protect the tooth once decay or damage of the tooth has reached a certain level. This procedure, called a root canal, is an advanced dental treatment that can save a tooth which has suffered a high level of decay.

Why Remove the Pulp?
If a fracture or decay has exposed the pulp or threatens to expose the pulp, it is best to remove it to prevent or minimize damage caused by the invasion of bacteria into the pulp chamber, or canal. The removal of the pulp also allows for the placement of strengthening restorations in the pulp chamber.
Removing the Pulp
After removing any old or damaged fillings, the dentist drills into the pulp chamber. Pulp that has been compromised will be removed, and the interior of the tooth filled with gutta-percha, a natural rubber, to seal the tooth. Sometimes a temporary filling may be placed over top of the gutta-percha, which is later removed along with some of the gutta-percha to make way for a permanent filling that may include reinforcement such as a metal post.
Restoring the Tooth
With the interior of the tooth repaired, it is now necessary to protect the tooth from further damage by installing a porcelain crown. Part of the tooth enamel is removed to allow for the installation of the crown. An impression of the mouth is made so that the crown can fit perfectly among your other teeth. You will wear a temporary crown while the new one is custom-crafted. Once it is ready, the new crown will be permanently bonded to the tooth.
