Tooth Whitening

The most popular cosmetic dentistry procedure by far is tooth whitening. Fast, safe, effective and affordable, professional tooth whitening can make a world of difference in your appearance and can boost sagging self-confidence. While not a permanent solution, tooth whitening does offer significant improvement in your smile’s brightness and whiteness.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states that "bleaching" is permitted only for products that contain hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide bleaching agents that can whiten the teeth. Hydrogen peroxide is typically used during the professional tooth whitening procedure, whereas carbamide peroxide is most often used in home whitening methods.

Why Teeth Stain

The porcelain-like enamel surface of our teeth is comprised of microscopic crystalline rods that effectively protect our teeth from trauma, chewing and sugar-related acid attacks. So while most of us began life with white teeth, the tooth enamel wears down over time. Our teeth become more transparent and the yellow color of dentin, the core material of our teeth, begins to show through, creating an ever-yellowing appearance. As millions of tiny cracks occur in our teeth during chewing, the cracks become filled with stains and debris that eventually cause a dull appearance.

Teeth whitening removes stains and debris to restore whiteness and brightness to even the dullest teeth.

Help Your Teeth Stay Their Whitest

What can you do to help your teeth stay their whitest?

  • Avoid red wine, coffee, tea and cola that can cause staining
  • Avoid acidic foods, such as citrus fruits and vinegar, that can contribute to enamel erosion
  • Do not smoke
  • Avoid excessive fluoride consumption which can leave white stains on the teeth
  • Teeth grinding can cause cracks in the teeth and may cause dark edges
  • Protect your teeth from trauma, especially when engaging in contact sports

Professional tooth whitening at Aesthetic Dental Studio involves carefully controlled use of high-concentration peroxide gel. The gums are protected with a barrier, then the gel is applied to the teeth. In intervals of 15-20 minutes, the gel remains on the teeth for a total of about one hour. If you wish, a home-use whitening system can be provided to help you maintain your beautiful new smile. While the results of your whitening will be immediately apparent, full results can take up to two weeks to develop.

Some tooth whitening patients find their teeth are more sensitive to temperature changes for the first few days following the whitening procedure. Some find their gums are irritated. Dr. Gordon Chee can help you resolve these issues that, for most patients, are nothing more than a minor, temporary annoyance.

To keep your pearly whites looking great, avoid food and drink that stains, practice excellent home oral hygiene and visit the dentist about every six months.

There are two basic types of whitening gels that have proven effective in whitening teeth – hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide. Both are oxygenating agents that penetrate tooth enamel to break up deposits and return your teeth to their natural whiteness.
