Tooth Scaling and Root Planing
Tooth scaling and root planing keep the gums healthy and lessen the chances you will develop gingivitis (gum disease). Good oral hygiene practices, such as daily brushing and flossing really are not enough to prevent the accumulation of tartar and calculus below the gum line that is the reason people develop gum disease.
The process of tooth scaling scrapes away the bacterial laden plaque and tartar from tooth surfaces, concentrating especially on the root surfaces below the gum line. Root planing is the procedure involved in smooth the root surfaces. A smooth root surface makes it difficult for bacteria and tartar to take hold.
Without tooth scaling and root planing, the gums become irritated and inflamed due to the accumulation of tartar and calculus. When this happens, the gums start to recede and the teeth loosen. This action forms spaces or pockets in the gums in which plaque and calculus accumulate in greater quantities. If this accumulation of plaque and tartar is left untreated, severe gum disease may develop. Severe gum disease results in the loss of gum tissue and jaw bone, which causes the tooth to simply fall out.
