How Safe is Tooth Whitening?
The reason some people have been concerned about the safety of tooth whitening is that decades ago, some tooth whitening treatments contained extremely high levels of bleach. This increased teeth sensitivity and even caused burns in the mouth.
Today’s professioanal whitening gel comes in several strengths, so you can choose a weaker one if you have extra-sensitive teeth. During an in-office whitening treatment, you can ask for a pause if your teeth start feeling too uncomfortable. A de-sensitizing agent can be applied. Take-home whitening kits contain de-sensitizing gel too.
Although some people may experience some sensitivity to hot or cold right after treatment, it normally stops within a couple of days, and you can use the de-sensitizing gel which will come in your take-home follow-up kit.
